London School Case Study

A site wide, CCTV system with around 100 cameras in daily use as a management tool

Queensmead School is located in Greater London and sets very high academic standards. The school once again achieved an outstanding OFSTED report recently and with over 77% of pupils attaining 5 or more A-C Grade GCSEs high standards are their goal in everything they do.
The School has educated and influenced the winner of 2008’s The Apprentice, the band Scouting for Girls and singer Elyar Fox to name a few.

Operational Requirement The footage from a high quality 3Mp IP camera has to be seen to be believed (The recorded image above is scaled down from and cropped to remove images of pupils but still gives an idea of the quality of image achieved).
Images and Video clips recorded on the day played a part in convincing those not present at the demonstration of the quality of the system. This quality and the usability of the system helped the schools senior management to better understand their own requirements and form their final Operational Requirement for the system.

The Solution The initial design proposal utilized a large 128 channel DVR with a separate IT Network for this system. However, for this site a system using distributed intelligence was chosen. Instead of installing the single large DVR it was decided to install multiple HD NVR’s (Networked Video Recorder) throughout buildings to record the 70 proposed cameras and this redesign created several benefits that were really the making of the system.

Training, Many of the staff attending the training day were already familiar with the workings of the system as they had attended the initial demonstration and been involved with the installation throughout the summer holiday. The schools ongoing use of Apple products made for a very simple handover. A preprogrammed iPad was “mirrored” onto the schools projector via their Apple TV and within a matter of minutes everyone had their own iPads set up and working.
